Default Why Do Dogs Lick Human Hands and Face?

I say it's to get the salt off the body.

What do you think? (Serious question. I
have researched the Internet to no avail.)

How does a dog replenish its salt anyway?

Lots of reasons. Salt probably being one, subservience being
another, "Kissing", unlikely.

I'll classify this question next to "Why do dogs eat grass?":
lots of reasons.

they're trying to figure out which wine to serve with you.
HTH!

elliott is simply a licker. he licks feet, legs,
hands--pretty much any exposed skin *except* faces. he's not
a face kisser. harriet is a face kisser, but she does it
passive-aggressively. it isn't exactly subservient, but it
*is* meant to placate. other than that, harriet isn't a
licker unless you've got something tasty on your hands.

harriet also kisses on command. when she *really* wants
something, she'll give one itty bitty lick with the tip of her
tongue. otherwise, when she's told to give a kiss, she'll
quickly press her nose against your cheek.

A bizarre and unsanitary practice. Are they after salt?

i recall reading something years ago hypothesizing that
kissing originated in the act of mothers premasticating food
for their babies, then feeding it to them directly from their
own mouths.
