Crate Training Problem
I am the owner of a now 14 weeks old norwegian elkhound named Kita. We
bought a sizable crate to "potty train" with, and during the day we have no problems. We take her out with the other two dogs atleast 10 times a day, my wife works from home, and most of the time we have no problems. The problem happens every night after we go to bed. She is put in the crate, which is sized so that she has just enough room to turn around and lie comfortably (as the directions said). Every morning we wake to find that she has poo'd (deficated) in the crate and she is sleeping in it. She goes a couple times during the day outside with no problem. We keep her downstairs with the other two dogs (not crated) and have tried keeping her in our room (maybe the sound of me snoring will make her feel better) but to no avail. This morning (it is 1:50am now) she was in her crate for the night about 30 minutes ago after peeing outside, I walk to the bathroom to find she had poo'd in the crate. Now I know that there are alot of people who say not to crate and will berate me for doing it, thats not what I want to hear, please. For those that do and have crated, what can I do? Am I doing something wrong? It has been almost a month and the behavior continues. Please help! Thal |

Feed the dog where it sleeps, in the crate.

Perhaps you are feeding her too late in the day, and too much. Oh, and no treats after dinner! I've always fed my dogs at 6pm, and bedtime is usually between 11pm to midnight. Our dogs always did a final poop before bed and we never had a night time crate accident. Worked for me. -- -Andrea Stone Saorsa Basenjis http://home1.gte.net/res0s12z/ The Trolls Nest - greenmen, goblins & gargoyle wall art www.trollsnest.com |

Thalador Du'Fosnee said in rec.pets.dogs.behavior:
For those that do and have crated, what can I do? First, give Kita's crate a thorough cleaning with an enzymtic cleaner like Nature's Miracle. Next, move her crate into your bedroom. Kita might be giving all the signals asking to be let out to poo, but no one is there to hear them. If, for some reason, this arrangement doesn't work for you, set your alarm for 2 or 3 am and take her out. At this age, potty training is all about management. -- --Matt. Rocky's a Dog. |

I mean, the problem is probably either that she's not going before bed, or she's got more to do. If she's not going at all (right before bed), you might try running around the block with her - that'll usually stimulate a bowl movement. Don't put her to bed until she goes. If she is going, but then goes again during the night, try feeding her 3 smaller meals during the day, but again, no later than 6:30 and no snacks before bed. The more often she has the accident, less undisposed to lying in her own feces she'll be. What's the breeder recommended? -- -Andrea Stone Saorsa Basenjis http://home1.gte.net/res0s12z/ The Trolls Nest - greenmen, goblins & gargoyle wall art www.trollsnest.com |
