Fidget still isn't eating
Well, not a lot, anyway. He will eat some things that I hand-feed him,
but he will not touch dog food. He doesn't even sample it any more, just sniffs it and walks away. At David's suggestion, I went to the store and bought a bunch of stuff to see what, if anything, he would eat. I found two kinds of dog treats that he'll eat, although one of them he will only sometimes eat. And probably neither one is all that great for him, but my thought right now is *anything* is better than nothing. He's going to see the same specialist we took Toby to in a couple of days (he has an appointment Wednesday, but if we take him in tomorrow night as an emergency, he'll actually the same doctor Monday), because the regular vet is out of ideas. The next thing they can think of is surgery to check for adhesions from his big surgery before we got him. I talked to the nutritionist who works with the doggy day care place, and she said (a) don't force him, (b) get some PediaLyte and put it in his water so that he's getting his electrolytes, and (c) try organic raw chicken livers. Well, OK. I went to the Fresh Field's and got some organic chicken livers and cut some of them up for him. I think Fidget feels the same way about them that I do--I have no appetite now either. :-) But he had the first normal bowel movement he's had since Toby died this afternoon. Only dog people (and parents, I suppose ;-) ) will understand why I called David in North Carolina to tell him this right after we got back in, and why he was so excited to hear it. Fidget *seems* in great spirits otherwise, yesterday and today. When we walk outside, he is back to his normal bouncy self, rather than kind of slinking along as if I'm dragging him. He enjoys playing, and hopping up on the bed or couch and plowing with one ear. He gets excited when I ask if he wants to go outside, and if I go into the kitchen he follows and makes the same kind of begging motions and noises he used to make. Only he doesn't always take the food he's begging for. So I guess he's coming out of his depression over Toby. But now we're back to still not knowing what's going on. This is a puzzle, for sure! -- Kevin Michael Vail | Dogbert: That's circular reasoning. | Dilbert: I prefer to think of it as no loose ends. http://www.vaildc.net/kevin/ |
