In some ways I find the second scenario more disappointing than the first. Since my dogs are first and foremost family members chosen to do the performance events I want I would find it disappointing if they didn't want to do the things I enjoy. If my making a living depended on the dog doing what it was bred to do and couldn't perform that would be worse. But, in either endeavor, your odds of getting what you want go WAY down if you stop selecting for it altogether. Sort of like the American Show Shepherd breeders being surprised when their dogs can't do schutzhund or SAR or a number of other things that most (but not all) of them are not breeding for. Beth |
