Trick training advice
On Sun, 7 Sep 2003 14:35:25 -0400 Chloe's Mom whittled these words:
We have a new trick we need her to learn. She has scratched the heck out of my front door when she is outside and wants in. I wanted to train her to give me a different signal for when she wants to come in. In my infinate wisdom - I thought "Doorbell"... and we picked up a wireless doorbell today. My training method: I figure its going to take at least 3 weeks of training before we are ready to mount it on the door and put it to use. step 1. She knows "give me paw" (aka shake) and she also knows how to retreive certain toys by name get the ball, get your rope and get your bunny. So I put the button in my hand and said "get the button" to get her to paw the button in my hand. When the bell chimes I praise and give her a treat. This is where we started today. Step 2. Place the button on the floor and make her go to the button and press it when I say "get the button". Step 3. Place the botton outside the door and when she scratches to come in - call through the door "get the button" and then open the door when the bell sounds and reward. Am I missing anything, or can you suggest any other advice that might help this move along easier? Your methodology is fine but - I wouldn't mount the button on the wall. That will only continue the movement that involves wall scratching and ideally you want to completely extinguish it. Mount it the same way you have taught her to push it, perhaps on a small wooden box that will allow you to secure it so she doesn't accidentally push it around. |
