Amazing Graduation
But HOW DID HE LEARN??? Can some dogs really learn in one hour a week? With little to no repetitions? All I can think of is that Drake, who was a shelter dog, had been through a puppy class with his previous owner. With the reinforcement, he "remembered" instead of learned. I dunno. I'm amazed. Hi Leah, Let me emphasize that I am NO expert on training dogs. But I have a theory... Drake learns fast because for him Mom's undivided attention is a rare treat? Laura and Angel |

That must be the GSD side...
-- Rusty Myers Austin, TX "Leah" -OFF wrote in message ... So I didn't have much hope for Drake. He is a nice, calm, biddable and friendly boy. Surprisingly so, considering his age - 8 months - and that he's a lab mix. (She says with GSD, but I don't see it. Maybe.) But his mom, a young woman, has FOUR small children, skipped a lot of classes, was late to others, and spent a lot of time in class trying to control the kids she ended up having to bring. During exercises, she'd do it once and then, when I circulated to see how she was doing, would say, "He did it." She freely admitted to me that she rarely worked with him. So yesterday was his graduation. I set up his test, and figured I'd see a dog who needed to repeat the class. I couldn't believe it. Out of 71 dogs that I've graduated, this was the best performance of all. There was only one glitch - she repeated "leave it" twice. Other than that, she used a calm voice, did not once put tension on the leash, and Drake had his eyes focused on hers the whole time. She didn't even use treats. When I told her how good he was, she again repeated that she didn't work with him. I believe it. I've seen her - the woman is scattered like the wind and pulled in a million directions.
