Default New puppy and new person :)

Hi everyone, my name is Cin and i am 20 and from Asutralia

I am getting a bull terrier pup in 6 weeks (he is only 2 weeks old now) and
i have already signed up for puppy preschool and have gone down to see about
the local dog training class that is held every sunday morning.
The last pup we had around was dads dog (3 years old) and he did all the
work with him (or lack of) i am in my own place now and want to train my dog
the right way.

We did the sunday morning classes over 13 years ago with my brothers two
dogs, they only went for a few months and learnt so much (the dog we have
left now still obays us when he hears us, he has lost most of his hearing)
so i can only imagin what a dog that goes every week will be like.

I am close to the breeders, they are friends of my parents and mum sees the
lady every wednesday night, so i have no problems with contacting them if i
need help, another friend of ours is an ex trainer as well.

I want to take the pup/dog with me whenever possible (such as shopping or
visiting people, holidays) so there will be a lot of car travel and walking
involved.

But i was wondering what advice i can get from you people about training and
your personal experiences.

I want to toilet train and create train him, our other dogs have all been
kept outside, so i am not sure how to go about toilet training! (anything at
all like a cat? My cats just seemed to know where they were allowed to go!)

Thank you very much for any help

Cin

- Hi Cin.

Congratulations on your pup

With young puppies it is important to take them out to potty after they
have eaten, after play, when they wake up and about every hour. When you
take him out for potty make is short, no play no long outings if he doesn't
go after a few minutes, then take him back inside and try again after a
short while. When he goes outside make a huge fuzz, praise, give him a yummy
treat make him understand that you are really happy about him going outside.
Putting a cue word on his business outside is a good idea as well. If he
finds it hard to hold it at night you can try remove his water after his
dinner as it will be easier to potty train him the fewer times he goes
inside. Never punish him for going inside as you don't want him to be afraid
of going in front of you as that will make it much harder to potty train
him. If you catch him in the act pick him up and carry him outside so that
he hopefully will finish there.

- It was an advice I got from the breeder of my pup, so I would guess
so. We don't drink at night either, so as long as your pup has plenty of
fresh water during morning, day, afternoon and early evening he should be
fine. I only took away my pups water during the potty training period, once
he had the idea down of going outside and was able to hold it at night he
had water in his bowl 24/7.
