Default When To Start Training a Pup?

We just got an 8 week old Golden puppy - she's a wild child with an attention
span of about 3 seconds. The trainer that we'll be using starts pups between 3
1/2 and 4 months, which is 2 months from now. What do I do in the meantime?

We've started on housebreaking, she's started walking (meandering) on a lead
and we're doing what we can to control her nipping. When do we start training
things like sitting, down, etc.?

I ask this because the puppy doesn't seem to have a clue as to who's boss yet
(we've had her for a week). Maybe she needs reinforcement via training - maybe
sh'e just being an 8 week old puppy.

Your input would be appreciated.

Thanks. Bob

training starts as soon as the pup comes home, whether you're
conscious of it or not. dogs pick up on subtle clues that we
often aren't aware of, so they're always learning. as for
formal training, you should start with sit, down, etc. right
now. work for only small periods of time (a few minutes).
for a young puppy, three or four two-minute sessions spread
over the day will be much more effective than one longer
session. make it fun! the puppy will be more interested in
training if you turn it into a game.
