Default Caring for an abandoned dog

Hi everyone,

I came home yesterday and found an old siberian husky who really looks
like she is in need of a hug or something.

I have some fliers out around the neighborhood but I'm not sure I want
to give her up if the owner comes to claim her.

She's extremely dirty, no tags, looks malnourished and her right front
paw is slashed so I have her at the vet.

The thing is, is she is really sweet but she looks horible. I mean her
ears might have a bit of infection (smelly ears) so how much effort
should I put in on looking her owner??

I know that's a bad question to ask but from the condition of the poor
thing I might not have to really worry about it.

A lot. When I was about 11 or so our Kerry Blue Terrier
disappeared. We were distraught - put ads in the local
papers, repeatedly called the local shelter and the local
vets, etc. She showed up a month later looking like crap,
including an infected eye, skinny, and so on. We were
thrilled to get her back. You don't know how she got got
loose or how long she's been missing (Siberian Huskies roam
for 10s of miles - sometimes more). Think how you'd feel if
she were your dog.

I know that's a bad question to ask but from the condition of the poor
thing I might not have to really worry about it.

1. You need to take her to animal control, or the shelter, and register her
there so you have powerful witnesses to the condition she's in. The
opinions of you and your vet will hold little sway with AC officials if the
owners decided to lodge a complaint. Ask AC to allow you to keep her in
your possession and continue her vet care but at least let them see her and
know you found her.

2. Its natural to assume that a dog in that condition wasn't well cared for
but not necessarily a correct assumption. For all you know she could have
gotten out (any number of ways, accidents do happen), lost and has been
missing for days. She could have been a very pretty dog just a week ago but
due to her traveling is now looking pretty rough. Its also not abnormal for
a dog to get lost and travel at least one county away. Her owners may be
looking for her, but not in your area.

Anyway, do the AC thing. That way if the owner shows up, AC can rightfully
question the owner about the dog's condition and judge for themselves
whether they should get their dog back. If AC says to give her back then
that's what you have to do but you can make the offer to the owners that
should she ever need a new home, to call you. AC may talk with the owners
and decide that they aren't suitable to get their dog back...or demand that
they first reimburse you for her vet expenses (that's the test of a good dog
owner, those who quibble about it don't really want the dog and are likely
to say "just keep her") before they can have her back. Either way, they
have legal standing and you don't.

Ok just thought I would let you know about the dog. The vet bill has
ran me 145.00 dollars (ouch), "Brandy" had a fecal sample and has a
worm infestion and also has a yeast infection in her right ear.

Her foot doesn't need stiches thankfully and she had to be shaved
because her coat was pretty matted underneath. Looks like she got into
something which matted her undercoat.

So yeah if the dog is claimed I will be asking for my money back on
this one.

The vet is in my area (not my normal vet) so I left a flyer with him
with her picture that I took last night.

I understand how she could be some poor kids lost dog and everything
but she has no tags on her, not microchiped and honestly I just keep
feeling like she's better off with me or a family that gives a damn.

I'll look into the registeration thing, I don't live inside city
limits so there isn't a registeration where I am ( I don't think) and
she isn't spayed either so that's going to cost me more $$.

She seems to be pretty old, the Vet guesstamated that she might be 8,9
or more years by the looks of her teeth.

Right now I bought her some Senior dog food and she seems to be eating
alright.

She loves my two dogs even though they both want to play all the day
she doesn't seem to mind unless they stop on her lol.

She also has the prettiest howl.
