Default Have a wee problem

I have a very intelligent, well trained poodle. Well, at least he was up
until recently...

For some reason he has taken to urinating on the lounge room rug. With
spring
arriving here the temperature change has made us aware of the problem
because the
smell has come out - we don't know for sure how long he has been doing this,
but
the rug is in a shocking state when you turn it over...

The rug is gone and he continues to use this area during the night.
We have tried many things to encourage the behaviour which we desire...

1. Added a water bowl to the lounge room - dogs don't like to contaminate
their water
supply so they should not wee near a bowl. This had one night's success
then he moved about
1.5m away and urinated there...

2. We give him rewards of treats and praise for urinating outside in the
yard.

3. We growl and take his toys off him if he has urinated during the night.

4. We return his toys one by one and shower him with praise and treats if
he survives
a night without urinating.

5. We make sure we take him for one extra late toilet trip before going to
bed instead
of relying on him to wake us like he once would have - if he needed to go
during the night.

Does anyone have any ideas of what we can be doing instead of the above
(which doesn't
seem to be working)? What can we do better? Unfortunately a doggie door is
out of the
question as the house we live in is rented and we own an indoor cat which
would not
survive long in this neighbourhood.

Thankyou in advance if you are able to give me any advice at all.

Simon.
