Boxer Bash Observations
We had our first annual Boxer Bash today...I'm surprised I still have enough
energy to post. It was a fun day if you discount the 6.5 hours of driving we did with a kid, 2 dogs and all their possessions. Here are some observations of Boxer behavior when in a large group of other Boxers plus some general stuff: 1. Most exhibit defensiveness on-leash, whether there is a call for it or not. Introduce two Boxers, even two who previously lived together but were separated until now, on leash and one will inevitably start a fight with the other. Some gave verbal warning signs like a low growl while others went from sniff-to-snap at lightning speed. 2. Much of the above is all show and makes for a very loud environment. We had a few who engaged, with one starting and the other all-too-ready to join in, and decided it was mucho entertaining so why quit? For all the ferocious snarling, growling, snapping and face-to-face combat, it was just noise and no injuries. 3. Fact: Boxers are naturally jealous dogs...jealous of their people, their canine playmates and any & all attention issued, even from a stranger. They are generally not jealous of belongings though. Keeping that fact in mind, imagine approx. 30 Boxers vying for attention and getting jealous over each other. It was really very funny at times because they like to make noise when they feel they're being ignored. 4. Boxers are copycats. If one dog barked, growled or whined, suddenly every other dog *had* to join in with their own verbal repetoire. At times we had a really *loud* concert going on. We decided the lack of music wasn't something we had needed to worry about because we never would have heard it in the first place. 5. When you're in a large meadow with that many Boxers and twice as many people, at least one Boxer will inevitably slip his collar and disrupt everything. In the middle of the scoop the poop race, one-eyed Bogie slipped his collar and ran back and forth like a bat out of hell causing all the dogs and all the humans to launch into an uproar. Bogie suddenly had about 10 people chasing him, making the chase-me-game that much more enticing, which made it last that much longer. I swear I saw him grin as he flew towards, and sailed over, 2 Boxers attached to their owners 6. The naughtiest of Boxers will suddenly become angels with bright halos when in the company of strangers. 7. The most angellic of Boxers will suddenly become monsters with big horns and big teeth when in the company of strangers. 8. Set up the entertainments near a body of water and watch the Boxers stay *as far away* from the water as their humans will let them. 9. A girl can be naturally verbose and have a "big mouth" but stutter, "uhhh" and "umm" quite a bit when forced to stand up and speak in front of alot of people. I won't name names. 10. You find out just how spoiled the dogs are when 1/3 of them show up overweight and decked out in designer collars with matching leashes and more accessories than their owners have for themselves. All in all it was a good day. We raised $600 for the rescue and potentially gained 2 volunteers and one adopter from total strangers who saw us and decided to hang around and get to know the dogs and their owners. -- Tara |
