Default Shepherd Mystery illness

One may as well begin with Steve38's letter to rec.pets.dogs.health:

My parents have two five year old German Shepherd's, otherwise
very vibrant and healthy. Three days ago one of them (Simba)
had a sudden loss of appetite and got very quiet, one more day
passed and it became very obvious he was suffering from more
than a cold or the hot weather.

Any sign of bloating? Sudden quietness, lethargy (not eating)
and bloating in deep chested dogs can be a sign of twisted
stomach. My last GSD died suddenly of this but normally the
lethargy and quietness are noticable months before a fatal
episode. If bloating (however slight) *is* another symptom,
then he's an emergency case and should be seen right away. I
hope it's not this but if it is, it's treatable through careful
diet and exercise so please don't be too alarmed.
Bu dum.
