dog potty training
My wife and I just recently adopted a german shepherd mix, about 1
year old, from a shelter. He is housebroken but, being a 1 year old, is playful and has a mind of its own. He never had much training, it seems, although he knows sit command quite well, and obeys it especially when he wants something, like going out of the house or having us throw his toys. We have been walking him twice a day everyday and he usually does his bathroom business during the walk around the neighborhood (which we clean up of course). We tried to have him do his business in our own yard ever since we got him but he doesn't seem to want to do it there and is just interested in dragging us to go explore. You can just take him around the house forever and he won't do it. (He is kinda stubborn, when he first came he went without even touching his dinner for about two days, leaving us worried, until we got him the same brand of dog food that he had been having at the shelter.) In the house, he has been rather excellent. Except for some urine marking when he first came, we have had no incident so far (two weeks already). My question is: How do we train him to do his business in our own yard? We need to teach him to do it because sometimes both of us are not home and a friend needs to be able to just take him out on the yard for him to go to the bathroom. Many thanks for any help. David |
