Default SOME R PEOPLE SOME R NOT...

It happens every year about this time. The summer people have left and they
leave behind their animals... : (

These tpes get a dog for the summer (usually a pup) PURE BRED OF
COURSEsighthen when the chill is in the air, they are off to Virgin Gorda...

I don't know why I am surprised that two pups have been abandoned down at the
marina....

My Traveler many many many moons ago,was abandoned right around this time, down
by the docks.

So off I go to get them.
Way down Cape almost 70 miles away.

SOME R PEOPLE... ACK!!!

Paulette~

Disclaimer first - I'm not there and I have no right to tell the locals how
to solve their problem. I hate when people do that to me.

However - my opinion............

I'm sure this is a serious chronic problem. The answer appears to me to be
similar to what the recommended action is with pet store puppies - buying a
puppy to save it continues the problem. Saving the abandoned dogs assures
the summer people that their dog will be saved. The summer people can
convince themselves that the dog is better off in the long run - if they
care that much.

Why not run a media campaign from Memorial Day to Labor Day - target parts
of it toward kids so that they will understand and question their parents -
that says, in effect, that we do not have the resources to deal with your
cast off dogs? Put flyers all around in grocery stores, marinas as well as
the traditional touristy spots, etc. Beach newspapers. Any dogs left
wandering around after Labor Day will be destroyed. Maybe include a picture
of a guy with a shotgun. Encourage people who may honestly lose their dog -
perhaps even while packing the car to go home - to take lots of pictures
while they're there and make sure some of them are of the dog. Then, they
can report their missing dog and also give animal control a picture to
identify him. Leave the implication that any dogs left behind not otherwise
identified will be shot.

I know, the media will get the story and run with it. But even if they do,
it *will* still make it news.

Paulette stop and think about Judy's points. I know Judy
was not serious about destroying. It was a point she
was trying to get your community to make. If people
are coming for summer vacations and abandoning
their animals year after year that is a serious problem
and personally I would think there are criminal laws
in place for such actions. I would be inclined to find
out who leased the place for the summer and have
SPCA or local law enforment take actions on the
people involved. Otherwise it is in some ways aiding
in the habitual occurance of this issue. JMO
