Default newbie question: licking legs

Hello!

This is my first post to this ng.

My rescued St. Bernard licks his front legs a lot. The saliva makes his legs
an ugly reddish color.

I have heard that this might be due to allergies. Is this true?

Regardless of what causes it, how can I get him to stop? Is there any way to
"get the red out" (sorry, couldn't resist)?

Thanks for any info you can give me.

Llew

Hi Llew,
It could very well be allergies. The only way to know for
sure is to take your dog to the Vet. Your Vet will
be able to decide the best course of treatment.

Often allegies can be from the food you are feeding
as well.

I would recommend going to the Vet first.

agreed. to "get the red out", there are products for show dogs that do
this, i think they're usually hydrogen peroxide based. check your pet store
(or online) for products that remove tear or saliva stains.

Allergies would be my first guess, but your veterinarian will have
better information. It probably isn't his saliva causing the redness
but the friction from his tongue.

friction can change the color of a dog's fur? i had no idea.
