I'm about 25 miles SW of the main San Bernadino fire, rather deep in
the populated part of OC. (When I bought this house, it was out on the
fringes, and one of the 1980 fires got to within about 1/2 mile. One
of the 1978 fires got much closer, maybe 1/4 mile, from the house I
had then, so there really are advantages to living in a developed
area.)

Even at this distance, the house looks like God dumped his ashtray on
it, so Ozzy and I are limiting our outdoor excursions. The local
air-quality wonks say the smoke/ash in most of the area is worse than
a Stage 2 smog alert. I'm in decent shape, but it really wasn't any
fun being outside earlier in the week.

The weather is starting to cooperate: much cooler, higher humidity,
maybe some rain by the weekend. Still some wind in the mountains
though.

For the people in the actual fire areas, right now it's too damn scary
to be heartbreaking. That will come later, after it's over.

That's too many close calls. Take care.
