When Dogs Fly
My beautiful, intelligent, well-behaved (well, OK, she's almost perfect :-)
GSD is just turning 5 years old. We had her flown to PA from Arkansas when we bought her at 8 months of age. Since we've had her, she is afraid of the wind. When she sees the drapes flutter or even the tree leaves outside, she gets very nervous, paces and usually bolts to the basement. She only acts like this when she is in the house (she is a house dog). When she goes outside for her break while the wind is blowing, she hesitates to come back in. Sometimes I have to retreive her (we have a large fenced yard). Otherwise, she never stays outside. Unless we are out with her, she comes right back in when she's finished with her business. It occurred to me that the wind from inside the house, may remind her of the jet's whirring engine. She seemed fine when I picked her up at the airport--not the least traumatized. We brought her home and she settled right in. We had no adjustment problems with her. Any ideas what might cause this and how we can help her get over this fear? |

You could try desensitizing her to the sound by getting a recording of the wind. Play it low, and play with her, feed her, act really happy. If she responds okay, gradually increase the volume of the recording. If it's not the sound that bothers her, then this may not help.
