Default Collecting piddle

Kavik had a bladder infection as a pup.

Kavik has always been extremely suspicious of those who would attempt to
collect his pee. I remember having to hide in a bush while mike walked him
on the other side of the bush and try to manuever the pie plate into
position amongst the thorns. If Kavik noticed the pie plate he would
quickly move away and give us both a look of disgust. He might have called
us "perv's" but I am not sure.

Over three years later Kavik is having some symptoms again -the leaking
isnt' just related to hellos. I called the vet made an appointment and
vowed to bring a sample. This time I had a secret weapon. RPDB members had
told me to get some sort of stick and a dixie cup. Attach the stick to the
dixie cup and voila - a pee catcher with reach.

So this morning, I made the pee catcher. The first time i made it, I put
the cup on upside down. Doh. Next time I got it right. Then we all go
outside. I figured that if it was first pee of the morning it would be a
long pee and I would have lots of time to catch some.

Out we go into the backyard. Kavik is already looking at me funny for
following him to the fence, so he detours. He goes to sniff so I jockey
into position. He goes to lift his leg but notices the pee catcher.
"PERV!!" he thought, and ran. He stopped halfway across the yard and glared
at me. It was then I noticed he was peeing at the same time. Racing over
there I managed to capture five drops of pee in my cup. But then he was
done and running off yelling GET AWAY FROM ME YOU PERV.

So, I take the boys to work, figuring I will give them lots of baited water
and then put Kavik on a leash and walk him with the pee catcher. Maybe at
work he might not noticed the pee catcher. But turns out Kavik will no
longer pee in the presence of the pee catcher.

Plan three. My coworker Katy comes outside and greets Kavik in a high
pitched voice, which ALWAYS induces pee leaking. I hold his collar, poised
ready with my cup. Nothing happens. Not a drop of leakage. But he doesn't
notice my pervie behavior and so I hand Katy the leash and we go for a
little walk to the nearest telephone pole. He lifts his leg and i put the
cup into position. He stops before any fluid comes up.

Damn. At least Katy is amused. As we walk him back to the car I notice as
we walk he is attempting to sneak a walking pee and I manage to dive
underneath with my cup and capture at least 20 more drops before he turns
off the faucet. Of course, far more than 20 drops end up on my hand, but at
least I got the sample.

Took him to the vet, and yes, he has crystals again. Special diet. No
treats until the ph goes down. Cranberry extract. And...the best part?????
I have to bring in another sample in a week.

Why don't you provide your dog with reinforcement when he urinates?
Over successive urinations stand closer and closer to him as
he urinates. In this way, you will be able to stand next to
him to catch his urine. Also, you don't need something as
big as a pie plate to catch urine.

Oh that's too funny, Beth! I wish you luck in obtaining your next
sample, and hope the crystals resolve themselves quickly!

I guess I should, now that it appears we may need to collect the piddle on
more frequent occasions.

As for the pie plate, the dixie cup doesnt' work either. Maybe a thimble!!
