Default Question for those who've bred dogs - or seen it happening

This question was triggered by the post from the man whose older male dog
was humping his new pup.

It's my impression that when dominance mounting happens, there's little
preliminary or appetitive behavior. And it's my impression that when
mating is occurring - or trying to occur, that there are several appetitive
behaviors - sniffing, licking, chasing, nuzzling - before "the act."

This is probably a very naïve view, because I've never seen dogs mating,
except for brief clips on TV, and I wasn't looking at them with this
question in mind.

Could someone clarify some of the differences to look for between dominance
mounting and mount for sex (or attempted sex)?

Thanks -

FurPaw
