Default wood floors and dog nails

well, we close on the house in three weeks (woo hoo!), and we're planning
all the stuff that needs to be done, like painting, etc. anyway, i have
some questions for those of you with wood floors. my old house has "sealed"
oak floors, so they have a polyurethane coating over them that helps keep
them from getting scratched up. the dogs run around on them all day long
and they look fine.

the new house has "oiled" maple floors. apparently this means they're more
susceptible to scratching. does anyone else have oiled hardwoods? is the
scratching bad, or can it be buffed out before company comes over? i could
probably have them sealed, but it's just another expense, and i'm feeling
pretty broke, what with buying houses, appliances, and the like. :-)

any comments, experiences, suggestions?

thanks!

-kelly
