my boxer will not calm down
I have a one year old boxer and she will never lay down and relax. I have
spoken to other people with boxers and they say that they are just hyper dogs and there is no way to train them. If anybody has any advise on what I should do eith her please write back Thanks |

More exercise and obedience training. A tired dog is a good dog. A dog
trained to lie down can be taught to lie down for longer and longer periods. --Lia (This message will invariably be followed by a vicious one by our resident troll. Could you ignore it? The rest of us have him killfiled.) Rklx851 wrote: I have a one year old boxer and she will never lay down and relax. If anybody has any advise on what I should do eith her please write back Thanks No way to train them? There are many ways. What have you done with her in regards to training so far? Have you taken her to any basic obedience classes or taught commands at home? At her age, its perfectly normal to be energetic. Its also perfectly normal for her to push your buttons and pretend to not hear you. Its just adolescence. Luckily the females of the breed mature faster than the males but you still have another 6-12 months of adolescence to go. Boxers don't respond well to physical and verbal corrections. They are so needy of human attention that the best correction you can use is your disapproval coupled with not giving her any attention. Timeouts in a crate work really well with this breed also. High praise and treats go extremely far when training a Boxer because they adore attention and the vast majority love any kind of treat you can toss at them. Of all the Boxers that I have been involved with in rescue (and believe it or not the age of 1-2 years old is when they're normally dumped due to lack of training/patience on the owner's part) only one has been incorrigably hyper to the extent that Ritalin would work wonders on him. He has no attention span and more will bounce off the walls 20 hours a day but that's not normal and I'm not exaggerating his behavior. Your female is likely normal in that she always wants to follow you around, always wants to be in the middle of everything, always wants to know what's going on, and never wants to be excluded. She probably does alot to get your attention, spends alot of time trying to climb on your lap or jumping around trying to get your attention and for you to play with her. That's just how the breed is and they're supposed to be that way. They won't grow out of it either. It'll tone down as they mature but an 8yo Boxer will do all of those things except spend a little more time relaxing than they would have as a 2yo. I'd recommend signing up for a basic obedience class for several reasons. Even if you know how to properly teach sit/down/stay/heel the class will be a social interaction that she needs. It'll get you both out of the house for an hour one night a week and she'll be so excited going to class and so attentive in class that afterwards you'll likely see her sleep for a little while. Adjust your training methods to include tons of high praise and treats for good behavior so that when she displeases you and you ignore her, it'll be that much more drastic a change for her. All anyone has to do to my female is tell her she's pretty and she's off on a hop/skip/somersault/kidney bean rampage for a good few minutes. If a person ignores her then she gets her feelings her and goes off to pout...in front of that person for added measure of course...but that's the worst punishment in her eyes & the eyes of many other Boxers. -- Tara |
