Default Dogs left on their own

Hi guys

I've got a question sort of similar to one I've just seen. My neighbours
have 2 dogs - an 18 month old Rottweiler and a 10 year old toy poodle (ok,
odd mix I know!)

I walk these 2 dogs at lunchtimes (sometimes with my own dog) as their
owners both work away from home all day. Now I don't really like the idea of
the dogs being left on their own nearly all day anyway, but now their owners
are intending to leave them overnight.

Well, it's not *quite* as bad as it sounds, maybe. They've asked me to let
them out for a wee in the afternoon, last thing at night, and again to let
them out in the morning. But does this seem wrong to anyone else? Or am I
being over-sensitive? I'm thinking of bringing them over to my house
overnight, but that brings up more problems as my cocker doesn't like the
rottie at the moment (he bit her on the bum) .....

Any advice gratefully received

Sounds like they're using you as their own personal dog sitter.

I'd charge them, personally, for this decision. A pet sitter typically gets
about $10-15 per visit.

Hi Atalante ,
Is this going to be a regular thing or a one off. If its just now and
then , I think they would be better off in their own home, they would
be more settled but you'd have to check with the neighbours that
they're not barking .

Oh, I do get paid for walking the dogs at lunchtimes I'm not quite nice
enough to do all this for free But I'm more concerned about the dogs for
this weekend. If I wasn't here, I'm sure they would just leave them at home
anyway with no means of getting out or getting clean water / new food....

Well, then, why don't you make it your business to be the dogs'
guardian angel? You will add immensely to their quality of life, and
the dogs will pay you with affection. I would be very careful,
however, not to say or do anything that implies a negative judgement
of the owners. They may feel they are doing the best they can, and if
you make them uncomfortable, they might push you away from their dogs.
I would also be careful not to become possessive of the dogs, even if
you spend more time with them than the owners, because that will
eventually lead to frustration.

Charlie
