Question for the hunters here
I actually have a few questions, only one of which is actually dog related.
I live in a residential neighborhood in Utah, quite near a busy road complete with gas stations, grocery stores, McDonalds, etc. There is a small sod farm that is set behind the homes and in between the establishements. Canada Geese hang out there a lot, yesterday there were at least a hundred. Kinda cool to watch, but I realize that the sod farm owner considers them a nuisance. I know the guy, he breeds very nice Labs, and he has told me that I can let my dogs out there to chase the geese off, which I have done a couple of times. My GSD couldn't care less about chasing the geese, I always have to throw his tennis ball in their general direction to get him going the right way Yesterday I was sitting in my house with my kids, and we heard 3 loud explosions. We went out to our upper level deck, which overlooks the sod farm, and saw the geese in the air. There were 5 geese still sitting on the ground, alive but just sitting or wandering. Suddenly I see the guy throw his Lab over the fence (literally) and send it after each bird. The dog chased and grabbed each bird by the neck until the bird went limp, and then raced to the next bird. The man went up to each bird (still alive), grabbed it by the neck and did the helicopter thing, wringing the necks until they were basically bloody strings. My daughter was screaming and crying, I sent her in the house. My neighbors were all gathered by the fence, some calling the police. It all happened rather quickly, and it was pretty horrific (for us non hunters). Some of the neighbors are avid hunters, and they were also pretty apalled. Anyway, the police were called and we were informed that the guy had permission so it was all ok. Question is, what was the dog doing? I realize Labs are hunting dogs, but he wasn't retrieving, it looked like he was killing the birds? Second question is, is this a common thing to rid sod farms, parks, and golf courses of nuisance geese? And is there some kind of bomb or something that is used by hunters to stun geese? I only heard the explosions, don't know if the guy fired a shotgun or what. I am pretty pissed off actually. My kids did not need to see that, and really, it was a pretty chicken **** way to get some Christmas geese. Not to mention, if the guy did fire a shotgun, it was way to close to our homes.
