Poop - how much is too much? [JERRY]

Of course, I am dealing with adults, which I think are much easier to train than puppies. I disagree. It's much easier to instill a new behavior than it is to break a bad habit. However, with young puppies you also have to take the lack of physical control into account. Leah, how many adult dogs have you housebroken? While I was actively doing rescue, I housebroke many of them... actually I can't tell you how many, because I worked under the assumption that none of them were initially housebroken. Fuzzywzhe is quite correct--it's far easier to housebreak an adult than a puppy. Since dogs don't generalize well to new environments, there is no "habit" of eliminating in the new environment to break--simply a new set of rules to teach. JFWIW, Dianne |

Leah, how many adult dogs have you housebroken? A few. I'm mostly going by reports from students. With puppies, they become steadily more reliable until they develop physical control. With adult dogs, the problem seems to persist longer. Of course, this is assuming that they're following my instructions on how to house train. It could be that people are more reluctant to confine adult dogs than puppies when they're not being supervised. All I can say is that's it's easy to housebreak an adult in *my* experience. It's never taken me more than 2 weeks ever to housebreak a dog barring some mishaps, like I'm too stupid to recognize that they really wanted to go out for a reason and not just because they felt like going outside at 2:00 am. However, with young puppies you also have to take the lack of physical control into account. To be honest, I've only had one puppy ever - they are rare in rescue. Many people in my group say it's harder to housebreak a puppy, and in my very limited experience with puppies, I'd have to agree.
