the real thing
today, Manu got to prove his "leave it" actually worked outside the house.
i mean, it's one thing to walk by a toy or a treat when he's in his own home, and there's a good chance he'll get an even better treat at the end. but what he did today was an entirely different story. on the way back from coffee this morning, we saw a freshly splattered raccoon on the side of the road. and when i say fresh, i do mean fresh. steaming, even. Manu noticed it before i did, and he started pulling towards it. his leash manners have been pretty good of late, so i knew there was something up even before i saw it. i said, "leave it", and then, "right here, look at me!", to get his attention. he looked and i started making a huge fuss, dancing around and singing, "good boy, Manu!". then we were past it and he completely forgot about it. i was very excited about this. the idea of pulling a warm raccoon carcass out of his mouth was not one i was looking forward to. my trainer calls leave it, "the command of opportunity". and this certainly was an opportunity to test him on it. -kelly |
