Default Weird phone call--right advice?

Looking for some hand-holding here--did I do right?

I received an interesting phone call. I organized our club's ATTS
temperament test and one of the local rottie clubs referred to me a woman
with a rottie pup who's attacking her and her family.

She's had GSD's in the past and was certain this was not your
run-of-the-mill puppy nipping. She said that if you went to pick up the pup
he bites, sometimes there is growling, sometimes not and that he "attacks"
for no apparent reason sometimes--her, the kids; anyone who's near.

The pup is a rescue (heritage uncertain) and somewhere between 12-14 weeks.
He is well exercised. She's had him for two weeks and has two children (8
and 10?) who she says *have not* been mistreating the pup or playing rough
with him. She did say that she was a little rough on the pup (yelling and a
swat on the behind) when it came to housebreaking accidents.

I informed her that I *am not* by any stretch an authority on temperament,
not a trainer (other than my own sweet lab Kali) and have no experience with
aggressive behavior or her breed but could recommend someone close by (an
excellent competition trainer who could either help her or recommend someone
local). I mentioned to her that I would stop the roughness with the
housebreaking incidents (but doubt that caused his attacking) and take him
to the vet as I've heard that sometimes dogs who don't like to be picked up
are in pain.

By the end of speaking to her I felt so bad. It became obvious that she was
looking for someone to tell her that it was ok to return the pup to rescue
so I told her that she really needed a trainer to come see the pup at her
home, perhaps there was trigger that she simply was not seeing and that
puppies, early on, can be worked through a lot.

Did I do right?
