Default Water in the Crate

I got an e-mail question from one of my students, and I'm not 100% sure I gave
her the best answer.

She leaves water in the crate for her dog overnight and during the day while
she's at work (don't know how long she's gone - I asked, but she hasn't replied
yet). She wanted to know if this is the best thing for Lucky.

I told her that I really didn't have a cut and dried answer, because there are
pros and cons. It's not good to let a dog go too long without water; on the
other hand, if his bladder is full in the crate, it's uncomfortable and
unhealthy. I told her it depends on the environment (how hot it is, for one),
how long he's left in the crate, whether or not he pees in the crate, etc.

If it were my dog, I was gone for 6-8 hours or more during the day, and it was
hot in the house, I'd probably supply a water bottle. I'm assuming that with
the crate bottle, it's more unlikely that the dog would drink as large a
quantity of water as if it were in a bowl, but he'd be able to keep himself
hydrated.

What do you guys think?

why is she crating the dog both at night and during the day?
that seems like an awful lot of crating to me. can't her dog
have free run of at least the bedroom at night?

What do you guys think?

FWIW i wash and re-fill my dogs' water dish every morning, and
they never touch it while i'm at work. however, if i were
crating a dog 24/7, i'd give it water in the crate. to not
give access to water when the dog is crated for extended
periods is, IMO, bordering on cruelty.

Which brings up what I got last night at the Holiday
Gift exchange, at my Agility Clubs annual Holiday
Party. It was one of those "white elephant" gift
deals. I ended up taking away the crate water
bottle thing from one of the officers of the
Club. She was NO, you can't have this
it is mine I need it. I said but I am going
on a trip and I need it more! LOL It was
very funny. The whole party was very funny.
People kept taking things away from
Reznor's conformation trainer. Poor
Jennifer. Everything she opened someone
else wanted. She ends up saying you all
are mean! Anyway I now have a crate
water bottle!

Sounds like an awful lot of crating to me, Leah. How old is the dog?
How much out of crate time does it get? I hope they are at least having
a dog walker come in a couple of times to take the dog out.

I do think that if the dog is crated for long hours, it should have
access to water. From my observation, Khan doesn't seem to drink much
during the day, and is generally in no rush to pee when I let him out.
Our rescue president used to say that her dogs would rush to greet her
and then run to the water bowl to get a drink as soon as she gets home -
they don't drink at all without humans around.
