Default Nerve damage in dog's foot--treatment?

*This message cross-posted to alt.med.veterinry*

I have an 11 year old mixed female dog (bull terrier/lab/boxer) that
has been having trouble with her back legs and feet for some time now.
She has been to the vet in the past year for several different
reasons, and I always have him check her back legs because sometimes
they spasm and he has said for awhile that she has arthritis. For
about a year I gave her glucosomine supplements with some success, but
recently we put her on Deracoxib, which has done wonders for her
comfort! She now wants to run like she used to and seems in great
spirits. The problem is that her back feet and legs sometimes just do
not allow that. Her back paw sometimes folds under, which is what my
vet told me might indicate that she has nerve degeneration, which is a
product of aging.

So it seems that the meds have helped a lot for her arthritis but it's
almost like because of this she's hurting herself more. When she
runs-- and let me tell you, she is a powerhouse, very, very strong--
sometimes her back legs just jerk out behind her, then she ends up
dragging her legs, paws down, unable to put her rear haunches up under
herself again. Once I pick up her hips and place her feet rightly on
the ground, she runs like a rabbit (literally, both feet in a "hopping
style" unison.)

I am wondering if anyone has tried alternative therapy for their
animals with similar conditions, like accupressure or accupuncture? I
am fortunate enough to live in Los Angeles, where I would have no
trouble finding these type of vets. But before I do too much
investigating I wanted to check out anyone else's experiences. Please,
anyone who has advice or experiences, post or write to me, so that I
know what to expect and what the chances are that my girl can benefit
from this sort of treatment. Even though she's 11 she is so strong and
wants to run like a pup.

TIA,

Jen and Brinnie
