Default HELP: New Puppy & Crate-Training

Hi all! People were quite helpful with the housebreaking thing, so I'd
figured I'd get people's views on crate-training.

As mentioned before I have a 9-week old Cock-A-Poo named Roxie (female).
We just got her 48-hours ago, so we're being patient. Just some questions
about crate-training.

What are your opinions on how to go about crate-training? How long should
we start leaving her in the crate (despite cryng). I know we are not to
reward her by taking her out when she cries. What we did was start to feed
her meals in her crate, give her a treat to "go home", give her some toys
when she's in her crate and leave one of my old shirts with her. We also
started by closing the door and sitting next to her while she's there.
Then we tried going to the next room and ignoring her while she mews and
cries. Sometimes she'll cry and stop, sometimes she'll continue to cry.

The problems we're having are at night - we have not yet left her in
overnight, and when we go out. We tried leaving for 2 hours last night and
found a nice mess when we got back.

Should we be crate-training at night?
Should we lie next to her (next to the crate) a little bit while she calms
down?
Should we crate-train while we're home or just when we're going out?

If anyone has any good tips, that would be great!

Thanks again,

FunkyMan
