Advice needed - growling pit bull
This is secondhand information - I was talking to my mom tonight, and
she mentioned that my sister is afraid of her dog. My sister and her BF have two pit bulls, about 9 months old. They aren't related, the female is two weeks older than the male. They are very different personality-wise. Apollo, the male, has always been submissive and quiet, very people oriented, while Kana is more independant, active and very smart (he's less likely to get into trouble, but she's been easier to train what is trouble and what isn't). Kana just went through her first heat a couple weeks ago, and Apollo is now being very "protective" of her. Apparently, when my sister approaches Kana to put her leash on, lead her to the crate, etc he is growling. I haven't seen it firsthand. These dogs are very, very bonded to one another - they shared a crate as puppies and I don't think they've ever been separated for a substantial period of time. They've received an average amount of socialization and training. I was going to suggest that she find a good behaviorist - how do you find one? The BF doesn't know about the growling, which is only directed toward my sister. I know that the first thing most dog people are thinking is "neuter" but I feel that he won't listen past that. He is really fond of the dogs, though, and cares a lot about their welfare. He wants to breed them eventually - this will probably make the behaviorist pack up and leave. Any ideas? Better yet, a behaviorist in Frederick, Maryland? Jana |
