Mange

... My dog has the Demodex type of Mange. She's on a sulpher based dip and also tablets to heal the sores. What have you folks done to help your dogs? She is so miserable and looks so scratchy. The vet will not prescribe ivermectin, so if I want that prescription, I'll have to find another vet? If you would like to send me an email, please use the one in my signature, as the one in the Reply To: is blocked. I'm sure she's miserable but she may only *look* scratchy. Demodex heals very well upfront with the dips. Normally after only one dip, the dog feels more comfortable and isn't trying to scratch nearly as often. By the week after the second dip we've seen a total halt in scratching. The hair will also begin growing back (like peach fuzz) after the 2nd dip in many cases. We've treated severe demodex where the dogs were completely bald (with one of them being fully crusted over as well) to mild demodex where it was caught while still localized. The two who were bald and in very bad shape were completely healed, testing negative on skin scrapes by 3 months (with dips being administered every 10-14 days). No oral ivermectin was given. I know its becoming the preferred way to treat demodex because the dips are very harsh in chemicals but they do work and IME they work faster for immediate relief of moderate to severe cases. -- Tara |

... Thanks Tara, yours is the first positive post I've received. I seem to get getting pressure to have the ivermectin given and my vet won't do it. I would have to change vets. Amy You're welcome. The Ivermectin isn't toxic like the dips are which is why so many people are against Mitaban. I'm not against either one but have more experience with the dips than with the Ivermectin treatments. The dogs we've treated were all rescue dogs, with unknown health origins and two who also had hypothyroid complicating matters. For all of that though, none have suffered any adverse effects from the dips and all had the demodex cured by them. -- Tara |
