Default Good dog, Ruby!

The other day, Ruby (on leash, cul-de-sac walk) met her across the street
neighbor (off leash, escaped Bull Terrier or similar mix). He came running
straight up to us, which was the first I'd ever seen him. We had few clues how
Ruby would react to a strange dog running up to her. I had her on her long
Flexi-Lead, so decided that unsnapping her wouldn't be the best idea, esp. when
I saw that 1) escaped and approaching dog was male and 2) owners were
following, shouting at dog to stop, return, whatever. I figured a male was
unlikely to fight with her, and I didn't want a loose Ruby with two unknown
people.

Ruby was quite polite, and the two dogs seemed to get along. Once the owners
got close, my primary concern was making sure that Ruby didn't attach herself
(via teeth) to one of the strange people nearly all over her trying to grab
their dog. Since their dog promptly started jumping on and off the front porch,
putting Ruby in the house didn't seem like a likely thought.

It probably looked a little weird- with the people trying to grab their dog,
and me unconcerned about their dog, but trying to make sure Ruby was not
looking aggressive, and staying between her and the strange people.

In any case, for a totally unexpected situation, it turned out very well. Ruby
made a dog friend, was well behaved toward the people, although she definitely
wanted to keep her eye on them (and their dog, too!). Since Ruby has only been
proofed at about six feet away for strange people, I was happy. Also happy to
see that she got along with a dog that wasn't intimidated by her (the other two
neighborhood dogs that have met her - all off leash, through the fence- run
away when she barks :-()

Since I haven't posted here in a long time, the background is that Ruby is a
GSD we got as an adult, deemed unadoptable "rescue", through a contact with her
breeder. I thought I was going to foster her, but it turned out that it was us
or euthanasia for her, so she stayed. She's been with us now for years!!! but
since she has a history of grabbing strangers, she doesn't really get to mix a
lot. I think she'd be okay, but it's difficult to find competent, willing test
people :-(
