Basset Vomit... Very Sick.. Please Help
I have a basset 1.5 years old. Early Friday we woke to diarrhea. Sat
and Sunday I woke to an immense amount of clear slime and yellow liquid vomit. I brought him to the local pet ER and they told us he was extremely dehydrated and they wanted to take x-rays. The x-rays did not show a clear blockage but the vet said we will watch him. At about 7p.m. when I was visiting he had about a 3 cups of bloody clear liquid diarrhea come out with allot of pressure. So the doctor said as long as he doesn't vomit again we won't operate. At about 11pm I received a call about him vomiting a large amount. So I gave him the go ahead. He operated and found no blockage.. He was also neutered while under.. He also took biopsy's of his pancreas, intestine, and stomach.. Monday we brought him to our local vet.. Monday at 6pm he was still very much out of it.. Tuesday at 12pm I visited him and he looked better he knew who I was and I felt better.. The whole time he's been hooked up to IV fluids getting antibiotics, and anti vomit medicine. The vet told me if he doesn't vomit tonight we will try a little water and food tomorrow.. Unfortunately he vomited a large amount of yellow greenish fluid. I saw him today at 12pm and he didn't look any better. He also vomited between 12 and 6. I saw him at 6 and he had enough energy to fight into my lap.. That made me feel a little better My question is does anyone have any idea.. The Parvo blood test came back negative The vet tells me good temp, good gums, and well hydrated… Those are 3 important things I am questioning Pancreas but he is torn between viral and pancreas. I say no to viral only because he lives with a 4 year old beagle and 7 year old terrier. The vet tells me he has at least a 75% chance of survival. I'm nervous because he hasn't had solid food since Friday. And it's now Wednesday.. |

Someone wrote about something similar in a basset not too long ago. But,
they had not idea what they were dealing with. Try to look it up, and you may want to try to e-mail them. Sorry I don't remember much about it, and my newsreader does not go back far enough.... Subject: Basset Vomit... Very Sick.. Please Help
From: "B. Peg" Date: 8/20/03 8:16 PM Pacific Did the vet run a blood panel? If so, what did it show? That's what i was wondering. There are several things I would want ruled out: leptosporosis, hepatitis, coronavirus. All can cause the vomiting and bloody diarrhea. Ping Buglady, what's your take on this? Ping Buglady, what's your take on this? ......No idea. Once they've been to the vet's and had all that stuff done, you'd think there'd be at least some idea of where to go next for a diagnosis. Wonder if they took a stool sample too or if the dog ate something when they weren't looking. Though it could still be pancreatitis I suppose. Had a vet tell me once that with pancreatitis he likes to keep them a bit on the dry side because running lots of fluid in IV can still make them throwup. Just have to wait for histopath of organs. buglady take out the dog before replying |

I'm not sure what they are checking for except white blood cell count and toxicity... to make sure the dog is not going toxic.. What other kinds of questions should I ask.. Another note is that the dog is alert and some what active.. But still also lethargic. Any Help would be greatly appreciated. |
