Adopted Standard Poodle Chewing - need advice pls
Hi Group,
Friends have just adopted a gorgeous 14 month old Standard Poodle. The original owners decided to give him up as they both work and the dog was alone (outside) all day. Some behaviour problems have come up that make me think there was more to the decision to give him up than just the dog's quality of life - he has had no training (lease or basic commands) and is proving to be a big time chewer. The new owners are signed up for obedience classes starting later this month, but need help on the chewing right now. As it is, the dog can't be trusted in the house alone as there isn't an area big enough that can be partioned off and made 'dog safe'. So when the owner goes out, the dog has to be left on the covered porch (fenced yard). Any suggestions on how they can proceed will be greatly appreciated. With my dogs, chewing was never a problem as when they were pups chewing of anything but their couple of toys was 'rewarded' with a firm no and a little smack. Should they do the same with this dog? He's gentle, very smart and stubborn. Thanks for any and all advice. Rose |
