Default What's "ping"?

After a long dry spell I've managed to get back to r.p.d.b, and am wondering
about all the posts starting with "ping". I know what ping is in a technical
sense, but not as it seems to be used here.

ping 'john smith'

is a means of saying "hey, John Smith, I've a message for you - please read
it"
