Default Pit bulls vs Am. Staffordshires

What is the difference between American Pit Bull Terriers and American
Staffordshire Terriers? One link claims they are the same, and another one
claims that they are different breeds that were derived from the same
original breed (Am. Staff.) AKC only seems to recognize Am. Staffs, while
some other dog clubs recognize both.

I'm confused - can someone help straighten me out or point me to a
definitive link?

TIA -

FurPaw
